A packraft is a bit like the Swiss Army knife for adventurers who dare to get wet. It's an ultra-light inflatable boat that fits in a backpack, trunk, or closet and deploys in minutes. Hiking in the morning, river descent in the afternoon, cycling afterwards... all without carrying 30 kg on your back. Magic? No, ingenious!
What's the difference between a packraft and an inflatable kayak?
An inflatable or rigid kayak is the tough, hard-to-move cousin. The packraft, on the other hand, is your adventurous buddy who goes trekking, crosses rivers, climbs passes, and sleeps under the stars. It's lighter, more compact, and above all, more adventurous.
Is it suitable for beginners?
Stable and easy to use, packrafts are accessible to everyone. As long as you can walk and swim, you can get started. These models are maneuverable and suitable for all adventure styles. Of course, if you plan to tackle a tumultuous river, a short introductory course can be useful (and it will reassure your loved ones!).
Does it drill easily?
No, unless you decide to hug barbed wire! JAWS packrafts are built to last: made from robust and highly abrasion-resistant materials, high-frequency welded, they have been tested in extreme conditions. And if you ever puncture it, we also sell repair kits. No need to panic!
Will it fit in a carry-on suitcase?
Yes, and even in a backpack! You can take your packraft on a plane and carry it to the ends of the earth (or to the lake next door, that works too). It's more compact than a large sleeping bag.
Is it eco-friendly?
Yes, the packraft spirit is: silence, no motor, no noise, no pollution. JAWS packrafts are durable, repairable, and upcycled after a good life of adventures. In short, you can explore nature... without trampling it.
Use and maintenance
How do you maintain a packraft?
After inflating it a little, rinse it with clean water after use (especially if you have sailed in saltwater).
Allow it to dry thoroughly and take the time to wipe down hard-to-reach areas.
Store it away from light and humidity.
Where can we do it?
Everywhere! Or almost. Here are some gems:
The tranquil rivers: Allier, Dordogne, Isère, Durance, …
The slightly more rock'n'roll ones: Verdon, Drôme…
The mountain lakes for the Insta view
Even the sea, if you're not afraid of jellyfish!
Don't forget that there are sometimes restrictive regulations for accessing certain rivers. You can find more information in the guide downloadable on the JAWS website. [See footer]
Can I go on the water alone?
Yes, in principle, solo models are designed for solo navigation. However, depending on the difficulty of your route, it may be preferable to be with others for greater safety.
In any case, remember to inform a loved one before you go out and to wear full equipment. You will find all the necessary information in the downloadable guide on the JAWS website.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes, as long as Fido doesn't think it's a chew toy. All JAWS models are robust and can be protected with a bikeraft cover, and if he can't swim, don't forget his life jacket (yes, they exist!).
How long does it take to inflate?
Using the inflation bag provided, it takes about 2 to 3 minutes to inflate your packraft. You can finish inflating by mouth if necessary.
To save time, you can invest in a small electric pump. If you prefer to travel light, a small hand pump may be sufficient to adjust the pressure according to the weather and the temperature of the water and air.
not in calm waters. However, some areas — such as nature reserves, protected parks, or private land — may be subject to stricter rules.
Be sure to do your research before making a "Christopher Columbus" landing! To learn more, consult the downloadable guide on the JAWS website.
What if I don't have a return shuttle?
You can opt for a loop, hide a bike on-site, or try hitchhiking with your prettiest, wet smile – there's no shortage of solutions!
Adventure also means accepting a little unknown, and the return journey is part of that. In a group, it's often simpler to organize with two vehicles.
But above all, the big advantage of packrafting is that you no longer depend on a shuttle: a simple backpack and a one-way or round-trip hike are enough.
Can I go in the rapids?
Yes, if you have experience! Some packrafts are designed for navigating Class III, or even Class IV, rivers. If that's not yet your case, it's better to start on calmer routes.
Advanced training courses and test centers are available to help you progress safely and learn proper packrafting techniques.
You'll find everything on the website under: "Equipment"
Do you rent out equipment?
Yes, we rent packrafts and everything you need so you have no excuse to stay on the bank: paddles, life jackets, dry bags, smiles included. Available for a day, a weekend, or longer if you fancy it.
