General information about packrafting
A packraft is a bit like the Swiss Army knife for adventurers who don’t mind getting wet. It’s an ultra-light inflatable boat that fits into a backpack, a car trunk, or a closet, and sets up in just a few minutes. Hike in the morning, paddle down a river in the afternoon, then hop on your bike—all without carrying 30 kg on your back. Magical? No. Brilliant?
A packraft is an ultra-light inflatable boat designed to be easily carried in a backpack. It is used to explore rivers, lakes, or even coastal areas, often as a complement to activities such as hiking or camping.
Yes! Stable and easy to use, packrafts are accessible to everyone—as long as you can walk and swim, you can go packrafting. The models are all easy to handle and perfect for all kinds of adventures. Of course, if you're planning to take on a wild river, a short introductory course won't hurt (and your mom will sleep better).
No—unless you decide to hug some barbed wire. JAWS packrafts are built to last: made from tough, highly abrasion-resistant materials with high-frequency welds, they've been tested in extreme conditions. And if you ever do puncture one, we also sell repair kits. No worries.
Yes, even in a backpack! You can take your Packraft on a plane and take it to the ends of the earth (or to the next lake, that works too). It's more compact than a large sleeping bag.
Yes, the packraft spirit is: silence, no engine, no noise, no pollution. JAWS packrafts are durable, repairable, and upcycled after a life full of adventures. In short, you can explore nature... without stepping on it.
Use and maintenance
By slightly inflating it, rinse it with clean water after use (especially if you’ve paddled in saltwater).
Let it dry thoroughly and take the time to wipe down the hard-to-reach areas.
Store it away from light and moisture.
Everywhere! Or almost. Here are some gems:
• The calm rivers: Allier, Dordogne, Isère, Durance, etc.
• Things that are a bit more rock'n'roll: Verdon, Drôme…
• Mountain lakes for the Insta view
• Even the sea, if you're not afraid of jellyfish!
Keep in mind that there are sometimes restrictive regulations for accessing certain rivers. You can find more information in the downloadable guide on the JAWS website.
Yes, in principle, the single models are made for solo navigation. Depending on the difficulty of your route, it might be better to go with others.
But in any case, don’t forget to inform someone close to you and wear the full gear. You can find all the details in the downloadable guide on the JAWS website.
Yes, as long as the dog doesn't think it's a chew toy. All JAWS models are durable and can be protected with the bikeraft fabric, and if he can't swim, don't forget the life jacket for him too (yes, they exist).
If you have the experience, yes! Some packrafts are designed for class III rivers, even class IV. Otherwise, start off easy. You can find skill development courses or test centers to practice and learn all the best packrafting practices.
With the included inflation bag: around 2 to 3 minutes. You can finish off by mouth. Want to go faster? You can invest in a small electric pump. To travel light, you can bring a small manual pump that will allow you to maintain the correct pressure, depending on the weather and the temperature of the water and air.
Not in calm waters. But some areas (reserves, natural parks, private areas) may have more restrictive regulations. Check before you disembark like Christopher Columbus and consult the downloadable guide on the JAWS website.
Either you do a loop, or you hide a bike, or you hitchhike with your most beautiful smile. The possibilities are endless. Adventure also means sometimes having a portion of the unknown, the return journey is part of it! If you're in a group, it's easier to organize, with two vehicles.
But the main advantage of packrafting is that you no longer need a shuttle. A backpack is all you need, and a walk there or back.
